My name is Alexus and I have a passion for teaching, learning, and leadership. On a personal level, I enjoy time spent with my loved ones and seeing the world. Yes, I am a victim of the travel bug. Exploring the wonders of man and nature feed my spirit. I believe the greatest moments of perspective, empathy, and understanding can be gained through seeing different parts of the earth we walk on.

I graduated from a rural High School in 2012 with an indefinite plan for my future. I knew I wanted to make a difference but I was not sure exactly how. I toyed with the ideas of social work, education, counselling, and other social careers. During this time, I took a year to volunteer, upgrade some classes, and get some experience in the world in hopes that they might point me in the direction I was meant to go. I came across an after school care program for students and children with special needs and fell head over heels with it. I knew then that my heart belonged in the classroom. I finally decided to make the jump into the movement of creating an education system that is friendly and accomadating to all forms of diversity.

I am currently in my fourth year of university and third year of the education program at the University of Regina. Over the summer of 2015, I travelled to Costa Rica to volunteer in a Special Education School. I spent an entire week in the country and got the most fulfilling experience of culture, abilities, and unique ideas to bring home with me to Canada.

Last Fall, my Education Core Studies class required us to put in a minimum of 20 Hours volunteer service with a chosen organization. I was placed in the Cochrane High School Developmental Centre as a volunteer assistant. I contributed to working with students in an all day intensive intervention program. I enjoyed the experience so much that I applied became an special ed. assistant with Regina Public Schools. I began in October 2015 and still work with RPS now. I have worked as a substitute and filled short term contracts in a couple of different elementary schools. I have experience working with students from kindergarten to grade five. During this time, I was also given a chance to work with assessments and interventions such as Fontas and Pinell™, Jolly Phonics™, RAD (Reading Assessment Diagnostic)™,  and social skills teaching.
